Baja Market Place

The month of February has gone by in such a blur, with several visits to southern California, that I haven't had much time to devote to this website. I will share some of this month's experiences here in Baja, however! I attended a food & art fair in the community of Baja Mar, the second weekend of February, and was pleasantly surprised to meet several Americans who have created small business enterprises down here. My favorite was www.bajasausage.com & www.angelegourmet.com. I had the most delicious sausage sandwich ever! (which was accompanied by pineapple juice with coconut rum). They have five different flavors of sausages to choose form...I took a package home with me! Here is their facebook page: www.facebook.com/angelegourmet.com . I stopped by a booth that was manned by Scott & Marie Pierre "Baja Bohemians" as they call themselves, and discovered we come from the same area of Orange County! Marie makes very beautiful handmade blankets & clothes, and her husband, Scott is a truly prolific artist!!! He exhibits his work at La Casa de Arte Galería in Punta Banda, as well as Mesa Art in Costa mesa, CA. www.mesart.net

For Valentine's Day, friends of mine & I attended another very enjoyable concert by Miguel de Hoyos http://www.migueldehoyos.net/ and Alex De Pue http://bajaartists.com/guest/alex-depue-2/ @ the very charming El Pescador Restaurant...($10 cover charge only!) This restaurant is located just north of the world famous lobster village of Puerto Nuevo.. (km 44 on the free road). Great food and a wonderful evening was enjoyed by everyone. El Pescador restaurant is fast becoming a popular place for dancing on weekends for the retirees down here.

I enjoyed a most wonderfully relaxing lunch with a retired friend of mine who has just moved to Baja. We found ourselves touring the grounds, which includes a Church, (one of the many historic missions founded in Baja) at Hotel Calafia, founded in 1773!!! Mario, our waiter, was delightfully entertaining with his stories of the area and his musings on Americans who visit Mexico. As you can see, the view of the coastline is spectacular, the prices were very reasonable and the FOOD WAS GREAT! Authentic Mexican cooking, in an elegant atmosphere..... We told Mario we would return...and soon!!

The reason we ended up @ the Hotel Califia, was that we each had an appointment with English speaking Dr. Guadalupe Batiz, a Medico General (General Practitioner). Both of us had heard many good things about her and decided we needed to have a Doctor here in Baja, who knew our medical history and who could advise us of the right hospitals and specialists in Tijuana, just in case we ever needed their services. While waiting to see her, we ran into two other ex-patriates, who concurred with our own feelings...Dr. Batiz is very knowledgeable and believes in preventive health care FIRST...syou will feel that you are in good hands!!
