The Baja Market Place

Following is a short accounting of my travels the month of May and the businesses I connected with.... some new...some have been here for many years. On Friday, May 7, I attended the cocktail party hosted by Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Baja, Mexico and Chef Martín San Román. This world-class spa & ranch is over 65 years old and sits on 3,000 acres of mountains and meadows beneath 3,885’ Mount Kuchumaa. The peak straddles the U.S.-Mexico border, and Native Americans consider its slopes and summit a sacred place — so much so that it was the first geographic feature in the U.S. to be named a National Historic Site by the Department of Interior based on spiritual significance. Most of the facilities and lodgings are sprinkled amidst world-class gardens. Probably the world’s first “eco” resort, the Ranch practices sustainable organic gardening and resource conservation, and leads the way in environmental protection and education efforts in the region. Within walking distance, their organic farm, Rancho Tres Estrellas, grows the healthy fare their guests dine on daily.

Chef Martín San Román, is the owner of "Rincon San Roman" at the Real Del Mar Golf Resort & Spa, which is located at the very northern end of Rosarito Beach, and his expertise marries the typical Baja California flavors, as well as Italian cuisine, Sushi and the unique creations of his own culinary flare with a touch of French and Mexican cuisine. Accompany your meal with the fine wines from the Guadalupe Valley, the most important winery area of Mexico. Be sure to treat yourself to this first-class experience in a beautiful setting and gracious service. You will not be disappointed!!! They offer a "Senior 3-Course Gourmet Dinner Special" on weekdays, for only $9.95.

There is a new place to enjoy in Puerto Nuevo now! MERMAIDS is a unique coffee and gift shop, whose delightful hostesses, Peggy & Nyla, will treat you to their very special cooking. They are open 10 AM, WEDNESDAY - SUNDAY serving LUNCH DAILY $3.50 PASTAS, SALADS, SOUPS AND DESSERTS. There is something different going on everyday. JOIN them ON WEDNESDAYs TO PLAY CARDS. Located at Arpon #14 - enter Puerto Nuevo through the main gate and turn left at the 1st street, go about 3/4 of the way down, we are across the street from a parking lot. the front of our place is turquoise and tomato red.

Modarte, is a recently opened unique shop in Cantamar. The name Modarte, Fashion Design and Applied Arts, describes the focus of this special little shop. The owner, Nikki, is an extremely talented artist and she offers a friendly and artful environment for ladies to enjoy. A collection of elegant consignment clothing and jewelry is also offered. Applied arts includes one-of-a-kind tinted and hand painted skirts and tops, artful sling bags, custom order loom woven items from throws, shoulder bags, cushions and more that are created with the image of your choice...and coming soon, checkbook covers with art done by local artists whose designs currently adorn the charming purses.

I had the opportunity to use the tailoring services of Jesus, a very talented young man offers his on-site sewing services. Whatever your needs, he can deliver, from cushion covers, curtains or drapes, clothing alterations, or he will create a dress (even wedding gowns) from your own sketch or magazine photo. Located most conveniently next door to Ruben’s Palm Grill in the precious little cottage in Cantamar. So please stop by when enjoying the fine atmosphere of Ruben’s Palm Grill and see what’s new. Fashion Shows at Ruben’s are in the works….OPEN 10 to 6 daily, Sunday 12 to 4 and closed Monday and Tuesday.
