A slice of the good life in Baja!

This past month brought more wonderfully amazing  experiences & contacts that I  would like to share with you all. Be sure to click on the pictures and links in this newsletter to learn more about our newest BajaMarketPlace.com businesses.

On Sunday, February 21, a friend of mine & I went to experience the Mexican version of  "Mardi Gras" in Ensenada. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to see the actual parade, but my friend & I did spend a couple of hours walking around the "fairgrounds' on the oceanfront.   We found that even though one could hardly move without bumping into someone or their bumping into you,  the family-like atmosphere was friendly, and festive.   The first thing we saw was a huge grandstand for musicians & comedians. We  ordered beer and sampled several food items, but our dinner of choice ended up being Chinese food! YUM! The police were there and had their own "parade" of sorts....must have been 100 of them...young men & women who are dedicated to making Baja a safe place for all to enjoy. We must have walked a mile before turning back! We also saw some of the fancy cars that had been in the parade, rides for the younger children, teens singing & dancing  on small stages, games to play and the usual crafts booths one finds at fairs.

A day trip to Ensenada which included a fabulous seafood lunch at Mahi Mahi and then a trip to the wine store of Santo Tomas and their cheese shop.  Within a block, we found  a small fresh fish market, and the best surprise for me was the French-like bakery of HOGAZA, which features, great breads, pastries,  olive oils, flavored balsamic vinegars, the natural jams & preserves, as well as pesto, of Tia Yadis.  I purchased a jar of pineapple preserves with rum and three berries jam. I also found gourmet salad dressings & other gourmet sauces for cooking. the most amazing find was  red & white wine-infused salami sticks!! I can't wait to share my gourmet finds with my friends. (This shop is Baja's answer to Trader Joes!) On our way back to our homes in La Mision and Mision Viejo, Susan & I stopped to purchase a very affordably priced case of our favorite wines from LA Cetto....(unlike Santo Tomas, LA Cetto  has a wine tasting bar!)

Baja also waited to see if we were going to have a Tsunami, due to the 8.8 earthquake in Chile. Thank goodness, that didn't happen!  However, several friends mentioned to me...and I also noticed, that the waves seemed to be a little higher upon the ocean the next couple of days.

The month of March brings with it DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME, St. Patrick's Day and the start of Spring &  Easter week vacations. We are all hoping that tourists will start to return to this wonderful country that embraces all people with a warmth and sincerity that is not felt so genuinely while visiting other countries.

I have it straight from the Cheryl Landon, the co-owner's mouth, that my favorite oceanfront restaurant, Poco Cielo will be offering some wonderful specials the entire month of March. Their " Lovers Special" will be extended into March, and, if you mention that you read about their GREEN BEER on this newsletter...you could get a FREE GLASS!! If you haven't already heard, there is an organic fruit & vegetable market hosted there from 2-5PM on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday afternoons of each month (March 3 & March 17th). It is so much fun to shop  and then have a light Mexican lunch and a 99 cent margarita... or two with your organic food-loving friends !!!

Your thoughts & suggestions about places to go! people to see! and things to do! will be most welcome. Until next month.

Your fellow traveler and compadre in Baja,

Kathleen Scott
