This past month......

I must say that the Baja Book Festival on October 9, was one of the best events I have been privileged to be a part of.  The event was well organized and JoAnna & Carla's excellent  marketing skills assured that there were hundreds of  attendees at what should have been entitled The Baja "Artisan Festival".  Not only books &  authors were highlighted, but local wines, food, (Splash, Hogaza Bakery,  & others, as well as a dozen or so local artists & musicians from Baja mingled with the many Americans living in Baja under the large oak trees in the ocean side community of Cantamar and the unique Galeria that is run by Jo Anna Knox. It was a perfect Fall day and the ambience was peaceful and upbeat as many people made new friends and acquaintances. I was delighted to be able to meet the current Mayor of Rosarito Beach, Hugo Torres, well known for his forward thinking leadership for northern Baja. He took the time to individually meet all of the exhibitors and to find out what they did, how they came to be in Baja and what they enjoy about this very special area. I can't wait until "we" do this festival again!! Congratulations for all of your hard work Jo Anna Knox & Carla White! see the article the Baja Times wrote about this event to learn more. Go to our AUTHORS page to see who was there!!!

Saturday, October 16, I also attended the Oktoberfest @ Reuben's Palm Grill with friends from the US who live here. What a hoot! $1.99 Brautwurst sandwiches & .99 cent Beers!!! Very Yummy!!! Who woulda thought you could find good German food in Baja, Mexico!!!

Sunday, October 17th was spent at the Rosarito Beach Art Festival, where I viewed the varied works of approximately 60 artists, enjoyed the entertainment,  beer & food. This was a very well organized event and well worth attending! Go to our ARTISTS page to see who was there and links to their websites.

I discovered that an old friend has a hair Salon in Playas Tijuana! Alfredo Franco, a longtime acquaintance of mine and formerly of Newport Beach, Las Vegas & Beverly Hills, has established  residence here in Playas Tijuana and has opened a hair salon. Estetica del Mar. He currently divides his working time between his new salon in Baja & Beverly Hills. You can reach him by e-mail: angelstwo2003@yahoo.com or call him at the studio (644)  609-6710 for an appointment for Color, Cut, Manicure, Pedicure,  Acrylic Nails, Facial, Reflexology, Skin Care, Body Wrap, Body Massage, Basic Color/Touchup Roots $ 30  Full Head Weave Highlights $ 60.  Alfredo gives FREE CONSULTATIONS before applying his superior skills & he uses vegan hair products!!!:  Prices $30 in Baja..$100 in LA for a session. He is ONE of THE BEST!!! What a delight to have my hair professionally colored and styled by him once again! I took a friend of mine along...she also had her hair styled by Alfredo....and was totally delighted with the results.

Alfredo suggested we try a beautiful NEW (opened 2 months ago!) oceanfront restaurant in Playas Tijuana, just a block north of his salon and few blocks south of the bull ring, called SUNSET LOUNGE.  WHAT A FIND!!! I felt as if I had walked into a restaurant in Beverly Hills!  the restaurant has 3 levels of dining, bar & private parties.  I especially liked the "weeping walls" and the spacious, modern open feel of the restaurant.  My friend and I were first cordially greeted by Carlos Davila, who let us select a table that afforded a view of Point Loma and the spacious sandy beach of Playas Tijuana.  I must say that the decor, the service and the food, as well as the presentation  of the food were 5 STAR!!!  I love living here in Baja, but it was very nice to enjoy that upscale dining feeling you find in the best of restaurants in the US....for a LOT LESS MONEY!!! I would describe the food "California cuisine with a Mexican/Italian influence".  My Caesar salad was the best I have ever had...it was served with  lace-like baked cheese and the lettuce was "au natural", cold and crispy! I also ordered their clam chowder...oh my!!! It was perfect! My friend enjoyed a garlic baked fish dinner with steamed vegetables.  We both had a drink, I chose a glass of red wine & Nancy had a beer.  Our total dinner bill came to $30.  I highly recommend this restaurant...I can't wait to go back!!!

You may want to consider having your Thanksgiving dinner at Restaurant Rincón San Román  Km. 19.5 Tijuana – Rosarito toll road Blvd. Real del Mar 1074 – 21 Real del Mar Golf Resort Zip Code 22565. ANIMAL STORIES: Here are 3 cute little kittens who found good homes!! "Sami", "Snowball" & "Minky"  were left off at one of the vacant lots in Mision Viejo late October, but managed to find good homes within 24 hours. (after helping out in the office of the rescuer) Sami is now being welcomed by 2 very curious Pomeranians in my household. "Minky" has 3 very happy young Mexican children to love, and "Snowball" is living on an oceanfront home with Maggie & "Buddy" a rescued puppy.

We are all very saddened by the tragic loss of 4 humanitarians on Friday, October 15.  Dr. Joseph Kuntze, President of the gold Coast Chapter of the Flying Samaritans says it eloquently.  "Four wonderful human beings on a mercy flight to help the truly poor in Baja California were tragically killed when the small plane they were traveling in inexplicably crashed in a remote area of Baja California. Dr. James Thorton, Dr. Graciela Sarmiento, Roger Lyon and Andrew Thiel gave up their time and were flying down at their own expense to provide free medical care to the migrant farm worker and laborers in San Quintin, Baja Norte, Mexico.

Jim was a talented plastic surgeon who was involved in this project from its inception in 1985. He had never missed a clinic and devoted countless hours to reconstructing burn victims, repairing birth defects, restoring hand function and removing disfiguring blemishes so that those whom fortune frowned upon could live better lives.

Graciela devoted her time and left her family here to give medical aid to those who had nowhere else to turn. At home she continued to give to the less fortunate through her practice with CHC.

Roger was a sports legend at USC and a successful attorney who sacrificed his law practice and flew us down in his own airplane, never refusing a call. His son Chris, a local emergency room physician of whom unrelentingly proud, led the search and rescue effort and located the wreckage.

Paramedic Andrew was just beginning his life and yet was willing to climb into that airplane to help others.

The Flying Samaritans family is devastated by this loss and yet know that our pain is nothing compared to those who have lost husbands, fathers, wives, mothers and sons. Our hearts ache with you and our prayers and thoughts go out to you. It is a comfort to us to know that they gave their lives doing something they loved; something they felt was important and something that was of service to others.

In a time when it is difficult to find heroes; when our sports figures are doping cheaters and our public figures are involved in scandal after scandal I can point to these four when my grand children ask me who is a hero. It would be a dishonor to their memory to turn our backs on our brothers and sisters in Mexico. We were not deterred by prejudice and bigotry in America, we were not deterred by floods and power failures, we were not deterred when petty jealousy and bickering threatened to tear us apart, we are not deterred by narco-terrorists and we will not be deterred by this unfortunate and tragic accident." The next clinic WILL BE HELD in November.

The world lost four friends Friday. "Amen I say to you, what ever you did for one of these the least of My brethren, you did for Me."
